Aquabattery secures €6m seed investment

Aquabattery, a Dutch climate tech startup developing a saltwater long duration energy storage (LDES) solution, has closed a €6 million seed investment round. The round was led by EIT InnoEnergy and supported by InnovationQuarter, Invest-NL, Init Power, and a group of business angels. Aquabattery is developing a novel flow battery that can store clean electricity in table salt and water for 8 hours or longer. When charged, the battery converts saltwater into acid and base and reverses the process when discharged. The company is preparing to launch its fourth pilot battery in Delft later this autumn. PhotonVentures, the deep tech venture capital fund focused on startups and scale-ups developing solutions with photonic chips, has closed its second fundraising round of over €15 million, bringing the fund's total to the targeted €75 million. The fund targets essential applications in data transmission, health diagnostics, and smart sensor systems, while also aligning with major global trends such as AI, AR, and VR. Private and strategic investors, together with the support of BOM (Brabant Development Agency), Oost NL, TNO, and the University of Twente, made this funding round possible. Amsterdam-based Farmless, a startup that aims to turn renewable energy and CO2 into carbon-negative food ingredients, has secured €4.8M in a seed round of funding. The investment was co-led by World Fund and Vorwerk Ventures. Farmless, which is crafting eco-friendly, functional proteins with a full amino acid profile, plans to use the proceeds for constructing a pilot protein brewery in Amsterdam. The funds will also support the development of Farmless’ fermentation platform and facilitate ongoing regulatory approval processes. We advised World Fund and Vorwerk Ventures on this investment.

InnovationQuarter invests in Synerkine Pharma

Synerkine Pharma, a Dutch biopharmaceutical company creating innovative pain solutions, has closed an extension of its Series A financing led by Flerie with support from new investors, InnovationQuarter and Utrecht Health Seed Fund, and existing investor Thuja Capital. The equity financing is accompanied by a matching innovation credit from Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend (RVO) Nederland – the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. The total new proceeds of EUR 12.1 million will be used to accelerate the development of Synerkine Pharma’s lead asset SK-01, a therapeutically active cytokine fusion protein, into clinical studies in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a severe chronic pain indication. We advised InnovationQuarter on this investment.
